Belle Époque (1992) - Beautiful, sexy warmth in war-time Spain

Flowers and sensuality in a poster for Fernando Trueba's Belle Époque

QUICK REVIEW:

A young, very eatable deserter from the Spanish Civil War spends the summer of 1931 at the estate of a good-natured, elderly gentleman, whose four, beautiful daughters take turns entertaining the young man.
Belle Èpoque is a magnificent film, which carries on the exquisite cinematic tradition in Spain for creating highly appealing stories of a passionate and liberal people. Especially with this tale, most non-Spaniards will become enchanted in the people with not a little dose of jealousy as an unavoidable side-effect.

You see why the four sisters all fall for the deserter ...

The young man is played by Jorge Sanz (Lovers (1991)), and among the lovely, courting girls are a very young, petite Penélope Cruz (Volver (2006)).
All the acting performances and the whole atmosphere of the very picturesque and sexy film warms you up, - and is an ideal pick especially now during the cold, dark winter-months.
Belle Époque makes you want to move to Spain. It is a treat. And it won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 1994.
The title comes from a period in French history known as the Belle Époque ('the beautiful era').

The film's director, Fernando Trueba, had his first success with the Movida Madrileña film Opera Prima (1980). He is still making fine films, and his next project will star Cruz again, and is entitled La Reina de España. Mmmm, I hope it'll be good!

The trailer is, unfortunately, not subtitled, but enjoy the lovely images, and go get the film on DVD straight away. You won't regret it!

Budget: Unknown
Box office: 5.4 mil. $
= Presumably a big hit

How do you like Belle Époque?
