Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009) or, Ice Age 3: Add Dinosaurs!

♥♥

Our ancient friends caught in a glaring pickle on this funny poster for Michael Thurmeier and Carlos Saldanha's Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Ellie the mammoth is pregnant, as her little family discover a lost dinosaur world, where Sid the ground sloth gets lost, carrying 3 dinosaur eggs...

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is written by Peter Ackerman (The Diplomat (2024, TV-series)), Yoni Brenner (Rio 2 (2014)), Michael Berg (Ice Age (2002)) and Mike Reiss (My Life in Ruins (2009)), with Jason Carter Eaton (Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas (2011, TV movie)) contributing story elements, and directed by Michael Thurmeier (The Scratist (2012, short)) and Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age (2002)). It is the 3rd film in the Ice Age franchise (2002; 2006).

A dragging story that is also very tied up to Simon Pegg's (Luck (2022)) new pirate, dino-hunting weasel character who goes bonkers and is a weirdly unfunny companion.

Wow-ing animation and fun moments and sequences, often being those with Scrat, the non-speaking squirrel character, and one female flying squirrel distraction, elevate an otherwise disappointing film.

Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012) - Lots of fun in 4th IA chapter

♥♥♥♥

An action-packed adventure at sea is promised on this splashy poster for Steve Martino and Michael Thurmeier's Ice Age: Continental Drift

A rift is taking place in our mammoth family, where Peaches has become a teenager. Now the continental plates start moving and breaking up, literally breaking up our friends. The larger group of them gets into trouble with an evil pirate ape on an iceberg ship.

Ice Age: Continental Drift is written by Michael Berg (Ice Age (2002)) and Jason Fuchs (Argylle (2024)) and directed by great Ohioan filmmaker Steve Martino (Horton Hears a Who! (2008)) and Michael Thurmeier (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)). It is the 4th film in the Ice Age franchise (2002; 06; 09).

The plot is simple and manageable, but the film scores on lots of funny gags and jokes: Ray Romano (Made for Love (2021-22)), franchise newcomer Wanda Sykes (Chivalry (2022, TV-series)) and others shine in the impressive voice cast, - and the filmmakers strike a good balance between the story line and episodes featuring the series' popular squirrel Scrat, whose obsessive hunt for an acorn of course is what causes the continental plate movements! This is fun and feels like a throwback to the classic Looney Tunes (1930-69) short animations.

The animation is fantastic to boot here, colorful and vivid to the eyes. Ice Age: Continental Drift is a fun-filled family treat.

I, Frankenstein (2014) - Monster nonsense, thick and bland

♥

A doom-ish landscape invites on this poster for Stuart Beattie's I, Frankenstein

Frankenstein's monster has survived for more than 200 years up until today, where the scientists around an old man get near to mastering the resurrection technology again, and thus a battle between creatures breaks out.

I, Frankenstein is written and directed by Stuart Beattie (Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010)), adapting the digital-only graphic novel I, Frankenstein Genesis (2013) by Kevin Grevioux (Wetworks Mutations (2010)).

Fantasy fiction as a genre is open to being far out, - but it can also be compelling, if the presented universe is persuasive. I, Frankenstein is regrettably only utterly ridiculous nonsense, and the only thing it has in common with Mary Shelley's 1818 masterpiece Frankenstein is her title character, which it steals without crediting her.

Aaron Eckhart (Midway (2019)) looks resolute in the title part, but that he is supposedly 200+ years old and made of various severed body parts is only revealed through a scar on his face, - which carries through down his pumped up, muscly chest and abdomen... The modern, blond scientist woman (Yvonne Strahovski (The Tomorrow War (2021))) refers to Dr. Frankenstein as if he was a recently passed colleague; while Bill Nighy (Living (2022)) as the film's villain attempts to find new ways of spewing dialog in vicious manners, reminding us of his work in other fantasy films, among them the related Underworld series (2003; 2006; 2009; 2012; 2016), also co-created by Grevioux. Miranda Otto (Downhill (2020)) is a gargoyle queen with attractive male gargoyles Jai Courtney (Jolt (2021)), Chris Pang (Charlie's Angels (2019)) and others, (regrettably none of them take their clothes off.)

The plot also includes blasphemous baloney such as that Satan comes from heaven, and that there is an eternal and holy war between demons and gargoyles.

This is tiring, very dark and self-congratulatory junk, however in short moments amusing junk, and if you are able to switch your brain very thoroughly off, some of the animated, made-for-3D fight scenes are mildly entertaining. But taken as a film, I, Frankenstein is another example of how comics-based offal litters the silver screens.

And, by the way, what city are we in in I, Frankenstein? It is filled with ancient buildings, many of them Gothic, including one enormous, Gothic church? Melbourne, Australia? That's where it was shot :-D

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) - Jackson's Tolkien engagement ends on a note of cinematic ruin

♥

+ Worst Movie of the Year

+ Most Undeserved Hit of the Year

A plethora of fantastical characters and dramatic vistas meets the eye on this poster for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The dragon Smaug is exterminated, and its enormous gold treasure leads to strife and a resulting gigantic battle.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is written by Philippa Boyens (The Lovely Bones (2009)), Guillermo del Toro (Crimson Peak (2015)), co-writer/co-producer Fran Walsh (King Kong (2005)) and New Zealander master filmmaker, co-writer/co-producer/director Peter Jackson (Bad Taste (1987)), adapting The Hobbit (1937) by J.R.R. Tolkien (The Silmarillion (1977)). It is Jackson's 13th feature and the 3rd and last in his Hobbit trilogy.

The last Hobbit most of the time looks, just like its two high frame rate predecessors, like a long, dubious video sequence from a computer game rather than the immersive, 'real' adventure feel of Jackson's great The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001; 2002; 2003).

Countless hairy, ugly, British-speaking dwarfs and other characters fail to ignite one's interest here, and the surreal ultra HD CG universe mostly impels one to shut the thing off or walk away. Lots of LoTR stars return in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which only heightens its offense. It is a disaster.

Puss in Boots (2011) - Catty spin-off has issues

♥♥

The titular cat and a wealth of other fantastical elements attract on this poster for Chris Miller's Puss in Boots

Puss is a feared, sword-carrying cat who meets a thrilling female cat and reunites with his old friend Humpty Dumpty for an adventure for the magic beans that lead to the golden goose!

Puss in Boots is written by Tom Wheeler (Empire (2005, miniseries)), with William Davies (Flushed Away (2006)) and Brian Lynch (Hop (2011)) contributing story elements, and directed by Chris Miller (Shrek the Third (2007)). It is a spin-off of the Shrek franchise (2001; 2004; 2007; 2010). It has its basis in the same-titled, 16th century European folk fairytale.

The film begins with energy and fun for a time, with cat characters and adult concepts intermingling in a colorful family package (not unlike in the Shrek movies), but later the film runs out of juice, as the Puss/Dumpty relationship that's meant to carry the film, simply isn't strong enough or exciting enough to do so. That leaves one sighing for other characters, - or, even worse, reminiscing about how much fun those first two Shrek movies were.

The animation here is handsome; there's lots of action, but Puss doesn't impress one as a great character in Puss in Boots.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) - Lerman and Jackson return in improved sequel

♥♥♥

Three young stars in a veritable sea of CGI on the poster for Thor Freudenthal's Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

Demi-god and high school student Percy Jackson finds out that he has a half-brother, who is a cyclops, and heads out on a new adventure with his friends, - against the evil Kyle and his father Kronos the titan.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is written by Marc Guggenheim (Supergirl (2017-19)), adapting the same-titled 2006 novel by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods (2023)), and directed by Thor Freudenthal (Hotel for Dogs (2009)).

The film opens with a rather dubious and confusing backstory about a character we only meet a lot later, but Sea of Monsters nevertheless is a clear improvement from the insufferably silly first Percy Jackson from 2010. It is freed from the countless, ungodly bit parts played by older stars, and instead we are here treated to more fun with the young cast, including a sweet plot-line about Percy and his new brother, and lots of 3D-minded action, monsters and a cute 'seahorse'. This is very safe entertainment, essentially not really about anything, but it is affable enough, not least due to the charming Brandon T. Jackson (Deadbeat (2014-15)) and Logan Lerman (Indignation (2016)), who incredibly enough actually plays Percy with his little boy's face. The female actors are anonymous and unexciting in comparison.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is still silly, but in more acceptable lengths, - as when , for instance, Percy's dyslexia is explained as a reason for him to suddenly see a map in the ocean... It may be the 3D film of the year.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) - Tired franchise looks for Fountain of Youth

♥♥

With new stars stepping up alongside franchise cornerstone Johnny Depp, a traditionally adventure-promising poster for Rob Marshall's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Captain Jack Sparrow appears in London, where he helps his first mate Gibbs escape and start on a new adventure, - this time to find the Fountain of Youth!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (The Lone Ranger (2013), both)), loosely based on the novel On Stranger Tides (1987) by Tim Powers (Powers of Two (2004)), and directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago (2002)). It is the 4th film in the Pirates franchise (2003; 2006; 2007).

Johnny Depp's (Transcendance (2014)) Sparrow act is getting a bit old, and although there is still some fun left in the character, in the film's best lines, On Stranger Tides doesn't add anything considerable new, which makes it feel as if it runs down-hill in neutral gear, figuratively speaking.

Penélope Cruz (Sahara (2005)) is sexy but confused in a story without any semblance of reality to it, while Geoffrey Rush (The Best Offer (2013)) again succeeds in blowing worthwhile life into his character, Captain Barbossa. When the musical theme plays, one might almost forgive that there is no really good story at play here, and sure in glimpses the handsome animation (costly VFX take over large parts of the film) and great hair- and makeup jobs can be appreciated, - but none of these elements can save this heavily loaded and simultaneously light-as-a-fly sequel. Another problem is that the post-climactic scenes feel endless.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a failed attempt at resurrecting the series after the dreadful third film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007).

Hotel Transylvania (2012) - Latest comedian as super villain animation comedy

♥♥♥

Humorous character takes on classic horror villains fill up this cheerful poster for Genndy Tartakovsky's Hotel Transylvania

A human male gets into Count Dracula's Hotel Transylvania by accident, a hotel exclusively for super villains, where humans are feared, and the guy Johnny falls for Dracula's daughter Mavis.

Hotel Transylvania is written by Peter Baynham (Arthur Christmas (2011)) and Robert Smigel (Jack and Jill (2011)), with Todd Durham (Tales of the Third Dimension (1984)), Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman (The Lego Movie (2014), both)) contributing story elements, and directed by debuting Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip, TV movie  (1999)).

Adam Sandler (Blended (2014)) here follows in the footsteps of his peer funny-men Steve Carell and Will Ferrell with an animated role as a super villain, although in a film that might score under the similar roles from his two colleagues, (the superior Despicable Me (2010) and sequels and Megamind (2010), the latter of which is arguably as good as Hotel Transylvania.)

The animation is good-looking, and some of the jokes and gags amuse, (many, - though they are kept tasteful, - are only meant for the film's adult audiences.) The story places weight on some nice values. It is colorful, silly fun and rumpus; light, musical escapism and feel-good fun, mostly based on Universal Pictures catalog of monsters, which have been rendered without their frightening sides. Sometimes the characters fly around in order to give the audiences something for their 3D bucks, - but one must look far for a story-related reason behind these sequences. Still Hotel Transylvania is fairly good entertainment, which is sure to excite especially children.
