Notes
Undoubtedly the least satisfying annual list to date comes after a year with cinemas forcibly closed by the China Virus pandemic through much of the beginning of the year, and here in my country (Denmark) now shut closed again, destroying the lucrative Christmas 'window' for the theatrical film business. A disastrous year thus is reflected in the pathetically low number of reviewed titles.
These lamentations aside, the year did turn out one masterpiece already, Jon M. Chu's invigorating, deeply musical and thrilling New York-set musical In the Heights. The Top 3 goes on with Ridley Scott's gossipy history drama House of Gucci and Charlotte Sieling's sumptuous historical drama Margrete den Første.
The Bottom 2 of the year are Cary Joji Fukunaga's woke, overlong Bond killer No Time to Die, followed by Lisa Jespersen's blah blah youth dramedy Hvor Kragerne Vender.
Great filmmakers who also turned out sub-par efforts in 2021 include Denis Villeneuve (Dune) and Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife).
The 2021 lists will be updated and enlarged in the future.
2021 titles currently on the watchlist:
