The end of Newt Arnold's Bloodsport is more than hinted at on this poster, where Jean-Claude Van Damme holds the gold medal in his fist with a cold, victorious stare |
QUICK REVIEW:
Frank Dux deserts the American Army and goes to Hong Kong to participate in the Kumite fights.
Bloodsport is an unbelievably low-brow, brainless movie with good 80's music by Paul Hertzog (Kickboxer (1989)) and an impassioned, - if not exactly well-acting or charismatic, - star in Jean-Claude Van Damme (Double Impact (1991)). The plot is idiotic, and the awful script is full of holes. Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland (2006)) can be seen in a military cardboard-like role. The violence is idiotic and callous and the 'based-on-a-true-story' aspect extremely dubious.
It is directed by Newt Arnold (Blood Thirst (1971), who was mostly a second unit/assistant director who worked as such on many movies like Sorcerer (1977).
Van Damme is good at looking like a raving maniac, here in Newt Arnold's Bloodsport |
