Experience what love 'feels like', (according to the poster), by watching Mike Mills' Beginners |
QUICK REVIEW:
Leaping tale of a middle-aged man, whose father has outed himself as gay after the death of his wife through 44 years.
Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor as father and son in Mike Mills' Beginners |
Ewan McGregor (The Impossible (2012)) plays the chronically downbeat man, who can't figure out his infatuation with a French beauty, who for a long time won't say a word to him. Differently uplifting is Christopher Plummer (The Last Station (2009)) in the wonderful role as a dying, newfound gay activist. Plummer got his first Oscar for the part and thereby became the oldest actor recipient of an Oscar ever.
Beginners is an unfocused story that unsuccessfully balances poignant existentialism a' la Sofia Coppola with a warm story of life. Fine acting in the leads doesn't quite salvage the film from its exaggerated indie/hipster 'qualities' that ultimately stand in the its way.

Beginners is a personal, autobiographical film for writer-director Mike Mills, who has previously directed short subjects and the feature Thumbsucker (2005), but nothing after Beginners yet.

= Big hit
What do you think of Beginners?
Do you agree that it is a bit too good-looking and 'smart' for its own sake?
