Oscars 2018: Predictions and Film Excess' favorites
The 90th Academy Awards are tonight, and as is tradition here is my annual post with my predictions and favorites for the Oscars this year.
The show will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who did well last year in the notoriously difficult job and becomes the first host returning for a consecutive gig since Billy Crystal did the same in 1997/98.
Most nominated this year is The Shape of Water with 13. Second is Dunkirk with 8 and third is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with 7.
Among the Film Excess favorites of 2017 that are snubbed by the Academy are four big, wonderful movies from the 'colorful' genres that are routinely overlooked at Oscar time: It (horror), Wonder Woman (superhero adventure), War for the Planet of the Apes (science-fiction) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (space opera). - Granted the two latter films are nominated, - but these two films particularly are so good that they ought to be nominated in the major categories and not just the much less prestigious 'technical' categories as is the case.
Full disclosure: This year at Oscar-time, I have seen just 14 of the 45 nominated feature films, so I am missing 31. The titles I have seen at the time of this post are Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk, The Square, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Call Me By Your Name, The Greatest Showman, Victoria & Abdul, Wonder, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Kong: Skull Island, War for the Planet of the Apes, Baby Driver and Logan.
Left out are as usual the three short film categories, as I have no educated opinion about who will or should win in these.
