This uninteresting DVD cover is what I was able to scrape together in lieu of an actual poster for Mika Kaurismäki's The Worthless |
QUICK REVIEW:
A man owes some thugs money, while his partner has acquired a valuable, stolen painting. On the run the two continue their evenly distraught lives.
At first one might be charmed by what appears to be Finnish dead-pan humor, but one soon learns that all Finlanders are more or less alike in the universe conjured up by brothers, writer Aki Kaurismäki (Le Havre (2011)) and writer-director Mika Kaurismäki (Zombie and the Ghost Train/Zombie ja Kummitusjuna (1991)). - None of the personalities put together sparkle in the ocean of inebriated, destitute Finnish souls. And none of them have any appetite for life.
The suspense is non-existing in the strange 'plot.' The unending, futile drinking of The Worthless continues of all places finally in Paris.
In lieu of a trailer for the film, not available on Youtube at the moment, here is a 3-minute interview with Mika Kaurismäki at the Toronto International Film Festival talking of his film Road North/Tie Pohjoiseen (2012)
