Video cover for Randal Kleiser's TV movie The Boy in the Plastic Bubble |
QUICK REVIEW:
A parent-couple with a bad gen-match get a boy without an immune system. He lives his life literally in a plastic bubble without physical contact with other people, which especially becomes problematic in his youth.
John Travolta (Pulp Fiction (1994)) and Glynnis O'Connor (California Dreaming (1979)) as his first love Gina are both tender and play honestly and skillfully, as do the parent-couple, played by Robert Reed (Nurse (1981-82)) and Diana Hyland (Payton Place (1968-69)).
This TV movie also has a cameo by real-life astronaut Buzz Aldrin (his first of quite a few) and a gliding, eminent score by Mark Snow (The X-Files (1993-2002)).
The extraordinary situation in the film, - inspired by a true story, - is conveyed with straightforwardness, candor, openness and seriousness. - At times Plastic Bubble even reaches existential heights; it ends SPOILER as an infectious tribute to life.
The film has a lovely, homely 70's atmosphere throughout; it is moving, sweet, different and original. TV-movies simply don't get any better than The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Its the title also spun a direct, political reference of living 'in the bubble.'
Director Randal Kleiser (The Blue Lagoon (1980)) went on to have great success with Travolta in their next collaboration, the beloved musical Grease (1978).
Travolta had a profound experience with the film, as he carried on an affair with Hyland off-screen, who portrayed his mother in the film, and was 18 years his senior, - and was still in the process of getting a divorce. Furthermore, Hyland then died of breast cancer, leaving Travolta with the job of accepting the film's only Emmy on her behalf.
