Jim Carrey fronting the funny Michelangelo-referencing poster for Tom Shadyac's Bruce Almighty |
QUICK REVIEW:
News reporter Bruce is something of a nag, and he doesn't notice that his beautiful wife (Jennifer Aniston) is getting to a place where she has had enough of him. He condemns God for his life's measly problems, - and gets his job!
In the fantastic, American tradition of fantasy-born comedies with a whiff of life-wisdom, Bruce Almighty is safe with an above-average Jim Carrey (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)) performance. He gets backed up by Philip Baker Hall (Hard Eight (1996)), Steve Carell (The 40 Year-Old Virgin (2005)) and Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption (1994)) as God.
Bruce Almighty is a special effect-heavy laugh-fest that lights up on every occasion.
Director Tom Shadyac had previously done two magnificent Carrey-films, Pet Detective (1994) and Liar, Liar (1997). He also directed the awful sequel Evan Almighty (2007) that focuses on Carell's character Evan Baxter. Shadyac most recently directed the documentary I Am (2010), which is supposed to be a very insightful, spiritual look at our life and world today.
Carrey is going to be seen soon in Dumb and Dumber To with Jeff Daniels, and then in the funny-sounding Ricky Stanicky, probably for next year.
