Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) or, Haunted California Idiots

+ Worst Movie of the Year

What's the dog barking at in the bathroom? ... A poster for Tod Williams' Paranormal Activity 2

An insufferable, rich Californian family, who reside in a large house with another similar family, begin to experience supernatural disturbances ...

The original idea of Paranormal Activity (2007) has evaporated, and the story served to us here in this prequel/sequel, taking place 2 months prior to the first film, is idiotic: The families record EVERYTHING, but they refuse to look at their footage, just as they refuse to leave their f-ing house when it becomes clear beyond any doubt that it is lethal to stay there. - Even though they seem to have money for garbage.
The faults might have been rectified some, if the film had just a couple of good characters, but we are not given such luxuries. Paranormal Activity 2 is presented as crude realism, often convincing as such, - but the style is terribly grating. Combined with the fact that everyone in it is a dribbling moron, it is a cliché-heavy, cardboard-like turkey. It is written by Tom Pabst (Extant (2015), TV-series), Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)) and Michael R. Perry (The Voices (2014)) and directed by Tod Williams (The Door in the Floor (2004)).

Here's a trailer for the most recent film in the franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015)

= Mega-hit
[Paranormal Activity 2 was released October 22 and runs 91 minutes. Cinemark pulled a trailer for the film from several Texas theaters after complaints that it was too scary. Filming lasted just 3 weeks in May 2010 in California. The film broke records at its premiere: For biggest midnight gross for an R-rated film as well as biggest opening for a horror movie of all time: It opened #1 to a 40.6 mil. $ first weekend in North America, where it was #2 the following week before falling to #6 and further down the list and grossed 84.7 mil. $ (47.7 % of the total gross). Its 2nd and 3rd biggest markets were the UK with 17.4 mil. $ (9.8 %) and Mexico with 8.1 mil. $ (4.6 %). Roger Ebert gave the film 1½ stars, equal to the rating given here. Another 4 sequels in the franchise have been released since the film. Paranormal Activity 2 is rotten at 58 % with a 6 average at Rotten Tomatoes.]
