Captain Kidd (1945) - Laughton entertains as the villainous pirate

A colorful poster for Rowland V. Lee's Captain Kidd

QUICK REVIEW:

A populist pirate gets hired by the king to help a ship by Madagascar around the turn of the 17th century. Instead, the unscrupulous Captain Kidd murders, plots and bombs.

Captain Kidd is an atypical narrative, because the lead is a villain all the way. But he still gets portrayed with depth and charismatic subtleties by the great Charles Laughton (The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)). Captain Kidd is a handsome film, which is actually ripe for a remake in my opinion. (Which is a note I only make on very rare occasions.)
It is written by Norman Reilly Raine (The Fighting 69th (1949)), based on a story by Robert N. Lee (From Headquarters (1933)), and directed by Rowland V. Lee (Son of Frankenstein (1939)). It is a little dated but very gloomy. - A good film.
